The bill sat idle in the House Appropriations Committee until Thursday, when it was sent to the Committee on State Government. It\u2019s set for a committee hearing Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\" id=\"attachment_168391\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ncnewsline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Rep.-Mark-Brody.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnewsline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Rep.-Mark-Brody-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-168391\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&nbsp;Rep. Mark Brody, R-Union<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Rep. Mark Brody, the bill\u2019s lead sponsor, said in an email last week that the value of the gold proposed for purchase will be lowered to $400 million to $500 million in a revised bill.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/BillLookUp\/2023\/h721\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House bill 721<\/a>&nbsp;proposes to store North Carolina\u2019s gold in a bullion depository the state of Texas created in 2015. Deposits were stored in Austin until a new facility opened outside the city in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dissatisfaction with the Federal Reserve is at the heart of the North Carolina bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reason \u2013 the federal government is consistently and increasingly devaluing our currency,\u201d Brody said in his email. \u201cTo begin to set aside an amount of physical gold over a number of years will put NC in a better financial position should the devaluing process turn into hyperinflation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the bill, North Carolina\u2019s gold would be stored in Texas while the state Treasurer studies the cost and benefits of establishing a North Carolina-administered bullion depository. The gold would be moved from Texas if North Carolina establishes its own vault or if it needs to be sold to help North Carolina pay its bills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Wesley Harris, a Charlotte Democrat with a doctorate in economics, said gold is as safe as any other asset, and it can rise and fall in value. \u201cIt\u2019s not like protecting North Carolina from risk,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\" id=\"attachment_168390\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ncnewsline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Rep.-Wesley-Harris-PhD.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnewsline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Rep.-Wesley-Harris-PhD-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-168390\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&nbsp;Rep. Wesley Harris, D-Mecklenburg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The U.S. dollar, like most other paper currency in the world, is fiat currency that is backed by the government that issued it rather than a commodity like gold or silver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Richard Nixon in 1971 officially ended the gold standard, breaking the link between the dollar and gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States has the most stable monetary system in the world, Harris said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Reserve isn\u2019t running amok,\u201d said Harris, who announced his candidacy for state Treasurer. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to take our money and put it in a less liquid asset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National groups are pushing a return to the gold standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soundmoneydefense.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound Money Defense League<\/a>&nbsp;encourages investments in gold.
